Total Teleseminar Meltdown…

This is NOT one of those hoaky, “I was in tears because my teleseminar had technical issues” marketing ploys to get you to relisten to a call.

This is an honest, never before in my life, teleseminar meltdown that I now see was Divinely Inspired. The spiritual business lesson in it is too juicy not to share, so here you go!

It All Started When…

It started when one of my assistants typed the wrong bridge number into the call prep sheet she prepares for me for each of my calls. (mistake #1)

Which was an error that would have been quickly caught by my totally amazing Business Manager, Renee.

Except that I bypassed our admin protocol (mistake #2) and emailed the assistant directly to increase the size of the bridge line, which she did, only it was the wrong bridge number she increased. (mistake #3)

Wait…it gets better…

Earlier in the day of my big teleseminar on “What Clients Want” my assistant asks if I want the bridge company to record the call as a backup.

“No” I tell her. “I’ll record it myself, no problem.” Thinking how often I’ve done this, what could possibly go wrong at this point given how many thousands of calls (literally!) I’ve led? You guessed it, this was mistake #4.

The afternoon of my call, Renee asks if I want her on the call. “No” I blithely say, thinking how it’s late for her, she’s been working a lot this week, it’s the holidays, blah, blah, blah. “I’ll start the recording myself.” Uh huh…mistake #5.

Now it’s call time. I dial in to find no one there (remember, at this point I don’t know any of these mistakes have been made).

I quickly figure out I’ve been given the wrong bridge number so I hang up and call the correct one.

I peel over to start the recording but accidentally press the wrong entry code so the recording won’t start.

Undaunted — after all, I’ve done this thousands of times, right? — I hang up so I can dial back in and start over.

Only I can’t get in to the call. All of the lines are busy because the correct bridge hadn’t had its lines extended.

I start to panic.

I hang up and try again.

Same thing.

Now in full blown panic I run into Richard’s office, ask if he’s on the call — he is — and promptly rip his headset off of him.

Problem solved, right?

Not quite.

Turns out, he dialed in to my call using the participant pin code, not the moderator code, which means I can’t mute out the call using his phone.

What choice do I have except to suck it up and start leading the call through the sound of dishes, cell phones, dinner plans and lord knows what else? (Geez! What are people DOING when they’re on a teleseminar?)

But I’m game and I’m intent on honoring my commitment so I smile and keep going.

Twenty minutes into the call Richard slips me a note that he’s on the call with my phone and using the moderator pin and do I want to take over that phone?

Blessing him profusely I break from the content, gratefully take my phone back, mute out the call and finally relax into what I had been delivering.

Problem now solved?

Err…not quite.

Richard hands up his phone, not realizing that doing so stops the recording. (mistake #6)

Unaware of this, I merrily continue on, only to find out afterwards that the call recording stopped at minute 21.

End of story? I wish…you’ll love this part…

After realizing I’ll have to re-record the call I decide to do something self-medicating so I pop over to Twitter for a minute, only to see my first Twitter hate-stream.

Two tweeples were lambasting me for doing “more promo on my call than an MLM person.” One of the tweeples chiming in with her barbs about what a loser I am wasn’t even ON the call.

My first thought when I read Mr. Mean-Tweets posts?, “A**&$#&”

My second thought? “Jerk!”

My third thought? “Uh oh, what if he’s right?”

Uncertain, I walked into Richard’s office and asked him whether there was too much promo in the call.

“No.” he said. “You were great!”

Hmmmm…Sweet, but not exactly the dose of truth I was looking for.

So I asked him again. This time, he said, “No, it wasn’t too much. That’s what everyone does.”

Bingo! I was busted.

I had slipped down that slippery slope of doing what I thought I “should” do rather than what is authentic for me (mistake #…oh whatever, I’ve stopped counting!)

Suddenly, instead of just being an “A**&$#&”, Mr. Mean-Tweet was someone I was blessing. His nasty snipes served a beautiful purpose. So did the umpteen technical glitches had that happened earlier.

In that moment I sat at my desk, looked at his tweets and said out loud, “Thank you!” I also thanked the Universe for making everything go so wrong so that I could see my truth.

Inspired, I quickly re-wrote my teleseminar from my heart and truth, regardless of what will “sell.”

So, what you have now is the re-recorded teleseminar with fresh content about money, mistakes coaches make that sabotage their business and more. The content I share will absolutely help you step up powerfully in YOUR life and business. Is there any promo in it? Yes, at the end. You’re free to stop the audio when you get to that part but I hope you’ll listen to the whole call and tell me what YOU think.

Here you go…the Divinely inspired, super content rich(!) call on “What Clients Want: How to Make Yourself Irresistible, In-demand and Highly Paid as a Coach in Today’s Market”.

  1. Thank you, thank you for the giggle this friday afternoon and for being so real! I’ve done maybe 2 of those at once but not all at the same time…whew….hugs to you! And what great system ideas you shared too (as long as we use them, right?!)

I also appreciate the it’s time to ditch what everyone else is doing and do what’s “right”. The world is calling for more authenticity - thanks for leading the way~

    En-JOY!

  2. Ah Kendall, we are so in the same place. In fact, I’d love to get on the phone with you for a quick chat.

In the meantime, I’ll share my experience yesterday. Did I tell you I’m moving to Colorado after the 1st of the year? Well, we had my phones set to switch over to the new number on Jan. 4. Somehow, the phone company jumped the gun and decided to switch them yesterday - DURING MY TELESEMINAR.

    Oh lordy.

I love you Kendall. And I LOVED your most recent blog post re how we sabotage ourselves.

We must talk about LIFT and you and me and so many other things.

    xoxo,
    Alexis

  3. Way to tell it like it is, Kendall.

I was on that call last night, and knowing your normally uber-professional style, I knew you must have been getting frustrated with everything going on. (I got tired of hearing the side conversations and dinner reservations myself.)

I thought you handled the whole thing quite well. But it’s still fun to have the visual image of you ripping the headset off Richard. Thank you for that! ;-)

  4. More evidence of why I know studying with you is the right fit, Kendall!

As humans, not only do we make mistakes or get tripped up by stuff beyond our control - sometimes we even slip off our own authenticity beam.

Life is a series of opportunities to check your motives and gauge how centered on that beam you are. People who are willing to do so and aren’t afraid to admit their human-ness when they stray from dead center are the people I most hope to attract and be attracted to.

  5. Oh Kendall, hugs to you and a HUGE thank you for having the courage and drive to write this post. Once again you show me that things are not always perfect and that imperfect quick action is better than no action at all. Love to you and KUDOS to Richard for being the white knight again. Have a very Merry Christmas, and Brilliant New Year’s eve!

  6. Just to add to the visual of me ripping the headset off Richard, when I wrote that I “asked” him if he was on the call, let’s just say that my tone of voice was a little, uh, insistant? LOL He was SOOO my hero last night!

  7. Missed this call, but sat in on your first one with Bill Baren and LOVED it. It was my first time sitting in on one of your calls. Love your direct style in this blog and think there should be more people like you and Alexis out there!

Everything does not need to be sugar coated, hidden and stuffed away! If it is then no one gets to learn from it, which is why we are all here right?

So grateful you wrote your blog!

  8. Oh Kendall!!!

Thank you for being “you”. I was on the call and felt soo bad that you were plagued by so many issues. Things happen for a reason and I enjoyed the call regardless. You are a professional and you handled yourself with class.

I’m looking forward to listening to your re-recording.

  9. Hey Kendall,

Procedures are put into place to help avoid these situations. At the same time it does help to re-evaluate them. Although, I don’t recommend purposely circumventing your own procedures to see what happens, as you found out, that’s the really HARD way to go about it.

    Love the transparency here, Kendall!

    Create a great day!

  11. Wow, Kendall!!
I’ve subscribed to your newsletters for a long time - and to me this is the most powerful blog post - I absolutely LOVE it and I have learned so much from you, and the experience you went through. Haven’t had time to listen to the call yet, but I’m sure it really is “Divinely-Inspired” and “Super Content-Rich!”
    Thanks so much!

  12. Hi Kendall.
I got out of bed 5 minutes before the call last night to listen in and was actually amazed how you managed all the things going on and thought this alone was very inspiring.
(its a bit weird hearing so many people eating during the call, when you are sitting with sleep in your eyes at 2 am in the morning)

Having this whole story around the meltdown assures me is both fun and very inspiring to allways look at “what am I beeing told here”. :-)

By the way - I have the full recording, if you ever want to track the difference between them. (and no it wasn’t me using the service for recording breaking in on your talk :-))

Again it is amazing how different the same messages can be served by just following your own path instead of doing what everybody else does.

Thank you again for your transparence and gifts.

    Love
    Sophie

  13. Kendall, thank you SO MUCH for sharing this experience!! This is why you’re a phenomenal coach and mentor….sh#$% happens, but what separates “the men from the boys” is how we HANDLE it.

And you’ve modeled how to turn a potential disaster into an opportunity for a breakthrough — and isn’t that what you taught us in CMMS? Around the corner from every breakdown is a breakTHROUGH. :-)

Thank you for sharing this story, for your transparency, and for staying true to your authentic message.

  15. Kendall,

Ditto everyone else’s comments on ripping the headset off Richard! Total empathy… I had a call with several hundred people on it and couldn’t get on as host this past summer.

Had to Reschedule…. completely humiliating! I didn’t have a “Richard” in the next room! Thanks for sharing the details… I got some sick gratification from it! :-) Is that OK to admit?? :-)

  16. I love how understanding people are when things like this happen. In all the virtual events that I’ve managed, hosted and facilitated since 2003, I’ve had my share of horror stories. And like Kristen said, procedures exist to help us avoid these mistakes, however, something can still happen.

I love that you’re sharing this with us, Kendall. I laughed the whole way through because I can just picture you explaining all this to me in person. I know that this wasn’t funny at the time, but I’m glad you were brave enough to share this with us. Shows way you’re so awesome.

  20. kendall~ Your transparency is a breath of fresh air. You are a trooper, dealing with challenging issues as they come up with grace, ease, and a healthy dose of humor. You are a shining role model on how to deal with adversity and come out the other side having learned and grown. Thank you for being the authentic woman you are.

  21. Hi Kendall

I was on the live call and stayed to the very end (even though that was 2.35 am in the UK!)In spite of the craziness that was going on in the first half hour, you still sounded cool, calm, collected and gracious. Amazing!

I got real value from the call and took notes even though I’m a BAMM II graduate (virtually on the recordings from the UK).

I wasn’t put out by the “selling part” which wasn’t excessive, in my view. Would I have stayed to the end at that time of the morning if it had been? These tweeters are just nasty!

I just love how you’ve turned all this around. It shows me afresh why I follow you! Look forward to listening to the new recording.

    Best wishes

  23. Kendall — thank you for sharing this somewhat funny story (at least I hope it is for you by now!) These things happen to everyone (well, not at once!) and instead of glossing it over, you chose to share it with all of us — so we can learn from it. Brilliant!

You are so lucky that you have Richard to tell you the truth. We all need someone in our business life that is willing to be honest, even when it might not be pleasant to hear. We are inundated with advice on how our marketing “should” be — make sure there is a call to action, make your offer irresistable, give a deadline, etc. — and it’s easy to stray too far into “marketing mode” and lose our focus on giving value (I’ve seen many a seasoned solo entrepreneur do this!) Bravo to you for recognizing it and moving back to Kendall territory :)

    Peace,

  24. They say when these huge technical disasters happen it means you’re on the cusp of a huge breakthrough! Thank you so much for your honesty and authenticity. My heart goes out to you. You experienced the worst nightmare any of us who lead teleseminars prays never happens. I’m moved and inspired by you as you stayed the course and delivered. And, you took a horrible experience and turned it into a gift. You’re amazing!

  25. Kendall,

I was on the call from the beginning to end and you handled the glitches quite well.
If everyone was on to receive the content - then that was their concentration. Humanity is refreshing.

Honestly speaking, I was having a bit of a meltdown myself and you supplied the antidote I needed to persevere. I stayed up late pulling out some old materials that I’d worked on a while back - they will be tweaked and utilized thanks to you. 2010 here we come!
Oh, I will listen to the new recording for the icing on this cake. Thanks again!

    Blessings,

  26. Well, Kendall, that must have been a horrible experience for you. I remember on my first teleseminar the gardner chose that day to use the noisiest lawnmower on the planet, and I was convinced that everyone could hear my kids two rooms away - but at least no techical glitches!

So now you know, a total assurance, you can deal with WHATEVER the universe throws at you on a call and I know that this experience has confirmed your authenticity and your capabilty.

  28. LOL… I had it on my calendar to call in, but it was a crazy week and didn’t make the call. Sounds eventful. I’m not an astrologer. I’m an energy worker and intuitive so I keep an eye on things and… Well…. Mercury is in retrograde, officially starting 12/26, but technical and other issues were to creep in as early as 12/9. The 16th was the new moon but, Uranus was going to make it a testy one!
Chalk it up to the Universe and it’s lessons for you! It will always shine the light and give you what you need. :-)

  29. Oh Kendall - my heart went out to you last night; it was truly a challenging time. I too was totally distracted by the noises on the line from people eating, to dishes, to whatever. What’s with that! To be blessed with this knowledge is not something to take so lightly.

On one of your calls recently you admonished us NOT to multi-task. This was a challenge for me at first, but/and not anymore.
You handled last night with grace and it is too bad that you have been disparaged. My first ‘in-person’ with you was at MSSI and it showed you are one classy lady. I look forward to learning and sharing more with you this winter in Tucson.
    Blesings to you and Richard

  37. Thanks for sharing your behind the scenes experiences and challenges with us. While it had to be frustrating, the consummate professional that you are clearly came through.

I am a frequent attendee to your free calls, as well as other’s free calls. While I recognize that the free calls are for the purpose of promoting the host’s latest and greatest, I usually find in the content offered a nugget or two or three that makes being on the call worthwhile. While I do think that last night’s call was heavier on the “marketing” side than you usually do, I still found those nuggets in the content.

I am sorry you were subject to hate tweets, because I don’t think it is deserved. The purpose of a free call is marketing and sales, not training and education. The fact that hosts offer free content makes listening to the sales pitch worthwhile. I can’t think of a free call that I have been on (and there have been many over the recent years) where I did not receive value for my time and toll call expense, including your call last night. I feel bad that Mr. Mean Tweets doesn’t seem to see it that way.

Thanks for doing and sharing a redo of the call. I look forward to listening to it. I also hope that one day I will be in the audience at one of your live events.

  38. Too funny (in hindsight)! I had a similar experience last week with a call that didn’t record, either regular or backup. When I looked at the content, I realized I wasn’t applying my own wisdom in a specific area of my practice, hmmmm! So I reoriented, rewrote the call (and the book chapter), rerecorded…. and it came out much, MUCH better, well worth the “error”.

Glad to know I’m not alone!

  39. Kendall, I’ve had a very trying week with Sales Pages, Copywritingy–you name it, I’ve had it and YOU my dear, were the first person to give me a very large out loud belly laugh! I’m right there with ya sister!

Can’t wait to listen to you call!

Happy Holidays to both you and Richard.

  40. Thanks for sharing your experience Kendall. Actually, it’s refreshing to see that we are still human and we do mess up from time to time.

I think a great lesson for people on the side of having never hosted a teleseminar, lead a training session, offered mentoring course, created information products is to realize we do what we can and sometimes, the “mess up” gremlins have at it.

What I love about the business we are in is that most (99.9%) of the people are amazing, but every so often someone comes along who allows us the opportunity to walk the talk.

In other conversations I have had recently with many colleagues, it appears as if the 1/10 of a percent is full blown right now and they are tweeting away. LOL

Great job with this Kendall. You’re a true professional in my eyes and one of the very best around.

  43. Kendall, I just wanted to acknowledge that you are definitely an authentic person and this post shows that.

I’ve naturally always shared both the ups and downs like you do, because we are life-long learners and many people can be helped when we’re transparent about our own issues and ‘glitches’. That’s authenticity and being a wonderful role model and mentor.

All the best to you Kendall!

  44. Hello, Dear, Straight-Talkin’ Kendall~

I thought for a moment I was letting myself be distracted when I moseyed over here to read your blog.

It’s Friday afternoon & I have several commitments due today. On top of my list are:
1- final approval on new website, and
2- responding to an invitation to be a featured speaker at a series of nationwide live seminars in 2010.

I’m excited about both, and feeling a bit hesitant about both.

After reading your tale (oh what a night!), I realize that the website needs a fresh eye - a from my Soul’s Divine Purpose perspective - cuz I’m concerned it’s following the “what you’re supposed to do with web copy” model.

And I while the speaking invitation seems an amazing opportunity to be on stage in front of 2-10,000 people, and share the stage with some pretty wonderful speakers-leaders, I am not sure what I’m resisting. There’s risk, of course, to commit to project like this, but I sense that’s not what’s bringing up feelings of hesitation.

So a few minutes here … and now I’ll return to what’s on my commitment list!

    Adore you! And celebrate you!
Blessings for the light and brilliance you share,
    Tambra

  45. Kendall,
I can just see you doing the call, especially the Richard headset part.

My business partner told me about your call and I had her repeat the story twice because I said Kendall? really Kendall? You were the one that taught me how to do teleseminars 15 years ago.

Secretly I am happy to know this happens to the best!

Carole Cross and I have been hosting MenopauseSummit09 and we were interviewing SARK and all of a sudden Carole, SARK and I were dropped off the line! Luckily we got back on and laughed and completed the call.

Here is to keeping it real.

  46. Kendall- I was on the call and you were a real trooper - AMAZING. This was my first time listening to you and I can honestly say that I learned more about your character in watching you deal with the setbacks than if everything had gone perfect as always.

Just know that I’m a new Kendall convert! You are the real deal. Thanks to Elizabeth Genco Purvis for pointing me in your direction!

    You rock,
    Sarah

  47. Kendall,
I was on the call last night and thought you handled it beautifully and gracefully. Thank you for being so real and honest.

  48. Kendall,
So sorry to have missed it live ;-) I’m laughing with you afterwards. And looking forward to the recording even if I’ll be missing the circus ;-).
Thanks for the humor and inspiration.

  49. What you just did was write a comic monologue for your next conference. How things can go SO wrong, yet you learned something that will help you personally. Another win for you…
And, easy for those who can’t and don’t do the type of work you do, to criticize. But their words blessed you. Just an example of how what your enemy means for harm, God will turn around for your good!
I tell you, I thought my teleseminar where my guest couldn’t get into the call for a full 30 minutes was the worst and I had to carry the call with uh - NO information. You got me beat Kendall!
    Have a merry, merry Christmas!

  50. Here is one more unfortunate situation. I tried to download your app last night during the call and it never emailed me anything. I tried from another computer and email and still received nothing. To this time, I never received an application. I took that as a divine sign I wasn’t supposed to participate this time, so no need to send me one now, but want you to know in case anyone else had that problem.

  53. Holy smokes, Kendall - what an awesome case study you’ve offered here! I was sweating buckets just reading about it! But you showed tremendous grace under fire. And it’s so important for all of us, whether we’re just starting out or in the big leagues or somewhere in between, to always be speaking our authentic truth. Thanks for being such a great and transparent role model!

    I’m inspired!

  54. Hi Kendall,

I was on the call last night and currently listening to the new recording. I thought you were very gracious about how you handled the noise on the call. Having not ever met you in person but I could feel your energy and authenticity. You are very authentic and I appreciate you for being a soulful woman. Thank you for walking and living in your divine purpose.

    To your legacy,
    Dorris

  55. Kendall,

I was on the call to find out about your program so I appreciated the information that others perceived as ’selling’ on your part. Perhaps part of the issue was that the call was intended to serve two purposes but might have been more effectively addressed with two different teleseminars. Regardless, I was more irritated by the clueless participants who couldn’t be bothered to put themselves on hold than I was about any technical problems on your end.

    Stay real…Nancy

  56. Kendall… I wasn’t on your call yesterday. I am just listening to the recording now. It is brilliant.

I can only empathize with what happened yesterday. Stuff happens…and it is what it is. What matters most is who we are when we dealing with it. You took the time to get right with yourself and with everyone else. You are the embodiment of ease and grace under fire. Your authenticity and genuineness speak volumes about who you are in this world. And we are all better for it !!

    Love and light …

    YOU are appreciated !!

  59. What an amazing story, Kendall. I, too, love the “ripping the headset off Richard’s head” visual! It’s great to know that things can happen to a superstar like you and you are generous and authentic and real in sharing this. I learned a lot just from reading your post for my future teleseminars!

Now I’m going to listen to the call!

  60. Hi Kendall,

Richard’s such an unsung hero. He’s the best. Go Richard!!!

I love what this incident revealed: we learn most from our alleged imperfect moments. Self revealing/releasing posts get lots of feedforward & feedback because so many of us feel the pressure to be “on” and “perfect” 24/7.

Maybe we can all stop this silliness and be real, flaws and all.

  61. Hi Kendall. I was on your call … despite the ‘technical glitches’ and found it, as usual, informative and interesting. You can be VERY proud of yourself for how well you handled what I call a “2×4 from the universe” … you sounded calm, gracious and collected (although, I’m sure at another level you were freaking out)
Mr. Rude Tweeter is likely just one of those people who wastes time in life trying to ruin other people’s lives. We all know people like that. What those people don’t realize is that, with time, everyone will simply ignore them.
I LOVED the picture of ripping the headset off Richard (poor, unsuspecting soul who was just trying to help!) and I can definitely see you doing that.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to re-record; and for ’stepping up to the plate’, taking ownership and SHARING WHAT YOU LEARNED with all of us.
See you in a couple weeks at Platinum!

  62. Hello Kendall,

Thanks for writing what happened and sharing this heavy duty Blessing in Disguise. I so agree with the need for being more natural. Doing our best, being organized but normal. Great for Richard!
I cannot say exactly what was meant by ‘too much marketing’ but more than once I have unsubscribed to something I found interesting and could have learned form, because of the ocean of mail arriving in my mail box. When I asked one of them why they kept asking me to buy/participate to something I had already purchased I was told that only the very top [expensive] systems have a way of signaling who has signed up. That was the reason for the info flood, they said.
All the best to you and Richard.
    Alice

  63. Isn’t it incredible how loved we are and supported when we’re honest, transparent, and imperfect? Just look at the number of support messages here — Kendall, I think you are more beloved for this happening than had it not!

And thank you for sharing — what a series of mix-ups. Sometimes I’m very hard on myself when things go “wrong.” You’ve made me realize that it happens to the best of us. And that dear Richard… leave it to him to get on the case and come to the rescue.

  64. Kendall, I have to jump on the “Thanks for being Human” bandwagon and comment on how beautifully (once again) you have illustrated the gift that is always, always present for us in every challenging situation.

How uplifting to have those less-than-perfect experiences turn out to be far more positive and impactful that your could ever dream of planning.

That’s what I call “Divine Intervention!”

  67. I am impressed by your resilience and moved by your candor.

Having just launched my first webinar (with SNAFUs), you have made me realize that it is not perfection that matters, but the desire to communicate and serve. And therein lies the perfection.

You have taught me more in this honest story than you might have in 100 polished calls.
    with thanks,
